The feat in checking the rise in Covid-19 pandemic in India has been attributed to the efforts of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, who just completed seven years in office on Monday.

President, Overseas Friends of Bharatiya Janata Party (OFBJP), Nigeria chapter, Srivastava Sanjay, made the disclosure to Daily Independent.

Sanjay commended the efforts of stakeholders, including scientists, Indian doctors, Ayurveda and Yoga practice, in the nation in fighting the menace.

While commending the Indian government’s production capacity of Remdesivir, which increased to nearly 119 lakh vials per month from 38 lakh vials, Sanjay noted that the Department of Pharmaceuticals intensified monitoring of availability, production and supply of drugs used for Covid-1 9 Treatment in early April 2021, as the number of cases of Covid-19 started increasing steeply.

Remdesivir is a patented drug, manufactured in India under voluntary licenses granted by Gilead Life Sciences USA, the patent holder, to seven Indian pharmaceutical companies (Cipla, Dr Reddy’s Lab., Hetero, Jubilant Pharma, Mylan,Syngene and Zydus Cadila).

He noted that initially, the government of India was importing the vital drug Remdesivir from other countries to ease out the shortage of Remdesivir in the country.

Speaking on the threefold increase in production of Remdesivir in India, the OFBJP president noted that the production of Remdesivir has increased at a rapid pace in the country since last month.

He added: “India has achieved times the production capacity of Remedesvir. The Minister of State for Chemical and Fertilizers, Shri Mansukh Mandaviya, announced that in just a few days, India will soon be able to meet the growing demand.”

He noted that the production capacity of Remdesivir increased to nearly 119 lakh vials per month from 38 lakhvials per month, adding that the Department of Pharmaceuticals intensified monitoring of availability, production and supply of drugs used for Covid-1 9 Treatment in early April 2021, as number of cases of Covid-19 started increasing steeply.

According to Sanjay, “The Indian government has chalked out a strategy with manufacturers to ramp up domestic production, as well as to import the drug from all over the world,” adding that the “Health Minister has observed that the supply of Amphotericin-B has increased many folds.”

He has assured that the government is committed to making all possible and necessary efforts to make it available to needy patients.

“A sudden increase in demand has been observed in some states for Ampnotericin B, which is being actively prescribed by the physicians to patients suffering from Mucormycosis, a post-COVID complication.”

He noted that the Government of India is, therefore, engaging with the manufacturers to ramp up production of the drug. “The supply position is expected to improve with extra imports of this drug and increase in its production domestically,” he added.
